Why Modern Etiquette Matters More Than Ever in Leadership
In today’s rapidly evolving world, leadership is no longer defined solely by professional expertise or technical knowledge. Increasingly, the most respected leaders are those who demonstrate emotional intelligence, respectful communication, and a strong sense of social awareness. At the heart of these qualities lies something that has often been misunderstood or underestimated: etiquette.
For over three decades, I have dedicated my work to teaching modern etiquette and personal presence. While many people associate etiquette with traditional table manners or formal social rules, its true purpose is far more profound. Etiquette is fundamentally about respect—respect for oneself and respect for others.
In professional environments, the principles of etiquette shape how we communicate, collaborate, and build relationships. Leaders who understand the importance of courtesy, clarity, and consideration often create workplaces that are more productive, inclusive, and resilient.
Simple behaviours—such as listening attentively, communicating thoughtfully, and acknowledging the contributions of others—can have a profound impact on organisational culture.
The rise of digital communication has also introduced new challenges.
Emails, social media, and instant messaging have transformed the way we interact, often removing the nuance and emotional cues present in face-to-face conversation. In this context, modern etiquette becomes even more important. Understanding how to communicate respectfully in digital spaces is now an essential leadership skill.
Through my work as the founder of the Susie B Finishing School of Etiquette Education, I have had the privilege of working with individuals from many walks of life—students, professionals, and community leaders. What consistently stands out is the transformative power of confidence.
When people understand how to present themselves, communicate effectively, and interact respectfully, their confidence grows, and so does their ability to lead.
Leadership today is about more than authority; it is about influence and trust. Trust is built through consistent behaviour, empathy, and integrity. Etiquette provides a framework that helps individuals develop these qualities in a meaningful and authentic way.
As we reflect on moments such as International Women’s Day, it is also important to recognise the role etiquette plays in empowering individuals—particularly women—to step forward with confidence and clarity. Professional presence, respectful communication, and social intelligence are powerful tools that help individuals navigate opportunities and challenges alike.
Ultimately, etiquette is not about rigid rules or outdated traditions. It is about cultivating awareness, kindness, and confidence in the way we interact with others. In a world that often feels increasingly fast-paced and disconnected, these values remain timeless.
By embracing the principles of modern etiquette, we can build stronger relationships, foster respectful leadership, and create environments where individuals feel valued and heard.
